Mazda’s most popular model in global sales, the CX-5, has been completely revamped for the 2026 model year. While the company has attracted attention in recent years with new models like the CX-50 and CX-70 in its SUV lineup, the CX-5 remains the brand’s core selling point. The new-generation CX-5 features radical changes to both its exterior and interior design, and is poised to usher in a new era in 2027 with Mazda’s in-house developed hybrid engine.
The new Mazda CX-5 unveiled
The new CX-5 rides on a different platform compared to its predecessor. The wheelbase has been increased by 76 millimeters, and the overall length has been extended by 114 millimeters. These changes bring the overall length to approximately 4.69 meters.

The vehicle’s expanded dimensions offer a more spacious living area, especially in the rear seat area. Enlarged rear door openings have improved entry and exit comfort. While official interior dimensions haven’t yet been released, rear seat legroom is reportedly approaching class-leading levels.
Similar improvements have been made to the trunk. The trunk lid’s opening has been increased, and the loading sill has been lowered by 13 millimeters, making it easier to stow heavy and bulky items. Loading length has been increased by 5 centimeters, and height by 2.5 centimeters. These improvements have further enhanced the vehicle’s practicality.
The exterior design retains Mazda’s distinctive Kodo lines, but features a significant modernization. The front fascia features sharpened grille design and stacked LED daytime running lights, combined with the new bumper design, creating a wider appearance.
At the rear, a large “MAZDA” lettering runs horizontally across the trunk lid. The slimmer LED taillights create a simple yet striking appearance. 19-inch sporty alloy wheels are optional on higher-end trims.
The engine bay also features a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The engine, which produces 187 horsepower and 251 Nm of torque, is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. However, Mazda won’t stop there. A hybrid version of the CX-5, powered by its own Skyactiv-Z engine, will be available in 2027.
This system, unlike the Toyota-sourced hybrid unit previously used in the CX-50, was developed entirely through Mazda engineering. Mazda describes the Skyactiv-Z as the “ideal internal combustion engine” and claims to offer significantly higher thermal efficiency compared to the Skyactiv-G.
The interior has seen a radical increase in digitalization. The center console features a 15.6-inch touchscreen, the largest in Mazda’s history. Powered by Google, this screen provides direct access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and other apps.
The console has largely removed the physical buttons. Traditional components such as the gearshift paddle and volume control knob are also gone. User controls are handled entirely via the touchscreen and physical buttons on the steering wheel. The next-generation CX-5 will be equipped with Mazda’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
