The NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition has sparked a major controversy with its design. Renowned repair technician NorthridgeFix described this new build as “the worst design ever from a repair technician’s perspective.”
Why is the NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition design the ‘worst’?
According to analysis by NorthridgeFix, the leaked images appear to be quite complex. The claims suggest that the card uses three separate PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) for the GPU, memory, and VRMs. This makes the repair process significantly more challenging than with existing models.
The biggest concern is the location of the GPU die. Leaks suggest that the GPU is located behind the main PCB. NorthridgeFix notes that to access the GPU, technicians must first completely disassemble the entire heatsink, interlayers, and other PCBs.
However, with existing cards like the RTX 4090, direct access to the GPU was possible after removing the cooler. The new design can turn even a simple reballing process into an hour-long operation.
NorthridgeFix emphasizes that a repair job that normally takes 30-40 minutes will now take hours due to this design. However, the increased labor time will directly impact repair costs.
The technician believes that due to this complexity, many repair shops may avoid repairing these cards or charge exorbitant fees. This spells bad news for consumers who are out of warranty.
It’s important to note, of course, that these comments are based on a leaked and unconfirmed design. There’s still a possibility that the final product will be different.
