Valve is preparing to make an ambitious entry into the console market with its new, small, cube-shaped system. While the device, claimed to be 70% more powerful than current PCs, has generated excitement, leaked Steam Machine pricing information appears likely to upset gamers.
Steam Machine Price Exceeds Expectations
Renowned tech channel Linus Tech Tips shared its impressions from interviews with Valve employees. Linus Sebastian predicted the device would carry a subsidized price tag of $500, similar to the Xbox or PlayStation. However, the silence and lack of energy from the officials in the room suggested the price would be much higher.

Console manufacturers typically aim to sell hardware at a loss and profit from game sales. However, Valve is expected to price this model directly to cover the hardware cost. This could push the device’s price to $600 or $700.
If prices rise to this level, the device’s dream of being an “affordable PC alternative” could be dashed. Players can build their own PCs with this budget or opt for a more powerful PS5 Pro. Valve’s lack of intention to break even makes it difficult to compete.
