After Swiss Nemo won last year’s Eurovision in Sweden with his song “The Code,” Switzerland hosted this year’s contest. The final night was overshadowed by more intense political debates compared to previous years. In particular, reactions to Israel’s attacks in Gaza were reflected in this year’s contest with protests. Despite this, the contest was completed as planned.
The countries that made it to the final included Italy, France, Germany, Israel, Estonia, Sweden, Greece and host Switzerland. The competition drew attention with Estonian artist Tommy Cash’s performance of “Espresso Macchiato”, and the winner was determined by the total points obtained from the jury and public votes.
Johannes Pietsch, stage name JJ, representing Austria, won first place in the jury votes. The public vote also supported this result, and Austria won the competition with a total of 436 points. In the betting odds before the competition, JJ’s chance of winning was 22 percent. This rate became reality on the final night.
Israel came in second place with the public jury votes. Estonia came in third. Thus, Austria will host the 70th Eurovision Song Contest to be held in 2026.
