SanDisk has significantly raised the bar in storage capacity. This week, at the “Future Memory and Storage Summit” event held in California, USA, SanDisk introduced the world’s first 4TB microSD and 8TB SD cards. But are these cards fast enough? Here are the details…
SanDisk Launches the World’s First 4TB microSD and 8TB SD Cards
SanDisk designed these massive storage cards specifically for devices such as smartphones, gaming consoles, drones, cameras, and laptops. However, it’s important to note that these cards only support the UHS-I standard, meaning SanDisk has slightly sacrificed speed in favor of increased capacity.
Regarding speed, SanDisk’s current 1TB UHS-I microSD cards can achieve minimum speeds of 30 MB/s and maximum speeds of 200 MB/s, although these speeds are not always consistent. For example, SanDisk’s 1.5TB microSD card only offers speeds of 10 MB/s and is classified as V10. The exact speeds of these new 4TB and 8TB cards have not been revealed yet, so it’s wise not to set expectations too high.
So, what could you do with such large-capacity cards? With an 8TB SD card, you could store your entire movie collection, photos, videos, and games on a single card. If you’re a drone user, you could store all the high-resolution videos you record during your flight on one card.
In addition to these SD cards, SanDisk also introduced a concept device called the “SanDisk Desk Drive,” a portable SSD with a capacity of 16TB. This device offers extremely high storage capacity and performance to meet the growing demand for content creation and consumption, making it a dream capacity for content creators, photographers, and videographers.
What do you think? Do you need 4TB microSD and 8TB SD cards, or are these capacities too much? Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!
