The federal ban on TikTok in the US is set to go into effect in the coming weeks. This has the potential to deal a major blow to the platform’s operations in the US. Accordingly, US judges have refused to postpone the ban.
US sets January 19 as TikTok’s deadline
The ban, which was first announced in 2023, will prevent American companies such as Apple, Google, Oracle and internet service providers from distributing, maintaining or updating TikTok. This means that TikTok will be cut off from communicating with companies that provide critical infrastructure and services that keep it active.
Analyst Samantha Chen said in her statement, “If the ban goes into effect, it would be disastrous for TikTok’s business in the US.” Accordingly, without the ability to download, update or support its core services, TikTok will not be a usable platform for American users.
The ban reflects years of tension between TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance and the US government, which has raised national security concerns about the platform. ByteDance challenged the ban in court, but the ban was set for January 19.
The ban has also upset TikTok’s massive user base, which numbers hundreds of millions in the US. Many people use the app not only for entertainment, but also as a source of income through sponsorships and viral content.
Some TikTok influencers have begun to announce to their users in their feeds that the ban is imminent. Many famous names on the platform are also gradually directing their users to platforms like Instagram, YouTube and Threads.
