TikTok has been fined €530 million for unauthorized transfer of user data from Europe to China. The decision was made by the Irish Data Protection Commission. The commission found that the company transferred personal data to China in violation of EU law and failed to comply with its transparency obligations.
TikTok fined €530 million
All companies operating within the EU are required to notify authorities before transferring user data to other countries. TikTok initially denied these allegations. However, the company later admitted that a small group of users had transferred their data to China.

The commission not only imposed a fine, but also required TikTok to bring its data processing methods into line with EU regulations within six months. Otherwise, the platform will be banned from transferring user data to servers outside Europe.
The penalty imposed on TikTok is yet another example of pressure the company has been facing globally. Similarly, in the US, the transfer of all the company’s assets to a local consortium has been put on the agenda.
The €530 million fine has gone down in history as one of the highest data privacy sanctions in Europe. Whether TikTok will appeal this fine and the steps it will take to comply with the regulations will become clear in the coming weeks.
