Toyota is preparing to make a big move in electric vehicle production. The Japanese automotive giant announced its goal of increasing the number of electric models from 5 to 15 by 2027. It also aims to produce 1 million electric vehicles per year. This move is seen as part of Toyota’s efforts to increase its competitiveness in the electric vehicle market.
Toyota steps up the gas in electric vehicle production
Toyota, which currently only produces electric vehicles in Japan and China, plans to expand its production line to five different countries. The new production centers will include the US, Thailand and Argentina. This strategy aims to create a more flexible structure against trade barriers such as currency fluctuations and customs tariffs.

Toyota will begin production of the electric version of its popular Hilux model in Thailand in October. Production of these vehicles will also take place in Argentina. In the US, production of the three-row SUV will begin in 2026, and the batteries for these vehicles will be supplied from a new battery factory Toyota is building in the US.
TIn Japan, production of a new SUV model called C-HR+ is expected to begin in September. This model will be available in Europe, North America and Japan. In addition, the next-generation electric Lexus is planned to enter production in August 2027. Toyota’s partner Subaru will begin production of a new SUV model developed together with Toyota in early 2026.
Toyota’s strategy in the Chinese market will be to focus on affordable models. The bZ3X SUV model, launched in March, is the company’s cheapest electric vehicle with a starting price of approximately $15,100. The model received more than 10,000 orders in just one hour after its introduction.
