Visual Instruments, a company specializing in visual technologies, has unveiled the Phantom, which it claims is the world’s first transparent computer monitor. The device will reportedly go on sale in the last quarter of 2025. While transparent displays are no longer a new concept, Visual Instruments developed the Phantom with the aim of making this technology suitable for everyday use.
Transparent Monitor Unveiled
The Phantom features a 24-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 4K resolution. The monitor’s most striking technical feature is its “Ultra HDR” brightness, which reaches up to 5,000 nits.

This brightness level is significantly higher than current monitor standards, meaning the screen can deliver a clear image even under direct sunlight. The display also covers a 100% sRGB color gamut. Connectivity options include USB-C and HDMI ports. Thanks to these ports, the monitor is compatible with all devices, including computers, game consoles, and smartphones.
The Phantom’s transparency technology isn’t achieved through a directly transparent screen, as with conventional OLED panels. Instead, the company employed a method similar to head-up displays (HUDs) in aircraft and automobiles. The image is projected onto a glass surface using special mirrors. This technological approach achieves a transparent appearance without compromising image quality.
Another key feature of the monitor is the user’s ability to adjust the transparency level. Users can dynamically change the screen’s transparency as desired, or even make the screen completely opaque and use the device as a traditional monitor.
The monitor is reportedly equipped with three different transparency modes. Visual Instruments claims the Phantom will also benefit eye health. According to the company, being able to continue seeing objects behind the image reduces eye strain.
However, no details have been shared regarding the scientific validity of this claim. Currently in early access, only 10 units have been produced, and three of these 10 units have already been reserved. The monitor’s price has not yet been officially announced.
However, the company’s estimated price range will be similar to the Apple Studio Display, around $1,600. The company states that each unit will be customized to user preferences and that shipments will begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
