TSMC, the chip manufacturer that has made significant strides in recent times, has officially opened its first factory in Japan. The opening ceremony in Kumamoto city was attended by many high-ranking government officials, including Economy Minister Ken Saito. The company’s chairman Mark Liu and its founder Morris Chang were also present, creating immense excitement in the country.

TSMC Kicks Off Operations in Japan
It is stated that major Japanese companies like Sony and Renesas will benefit the most from the factory’s production. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed his satisfaction with the opening and emphasized that they would continue to provide financial support to the chip sector.
Additionally, Kishida mentioned that they would facilitate the opening of a second TSMC factory planned in Kumamoto. It was recently revealed that the government had prepared a stimulus package worth $4.86 billion for this factory.
Just before the opening, TSMC’s management announced that they had doubled their investments in the country to $20 billion. The second factory, scheduled to start production by the end of 2027, is expected to specialize in custom chips used in high-performance computers. Japan, which has lost its leadership in the technology sector in recent years, has allocated a significant budget in hopes of returning to its former glory. Whether they will succeed remains to be seen.
