The Ministry of National Defense R&D Center announced Turkey’s highest-destructive munition, the GAZAP bomb, which it unveiled to the public for the first time at the IDEF 2025 defense industry fair. The MK-84-class bomb weighs 2,000 pounds (approximately 970 kilograms) and stands out for its thermobaric effect.
MK-84 GAZAP officially unveiled
GAZAP disperses 10,000 specially shaped particles into the environment upon detonation, providing effective destruction not only across a target but also across a wide area. Its average density of 10.6 particles per square meter offers approximately three times the density of current NATO-standard MK-84 bombs.
Thanks to this technical superiority, GAZAP was designed to provide high effectiveness over large target areas. Fully compatible with existing MK-84 guidance kits, the bomb was developed to meet operational requirements in the field.
Other notable munitions unveiled at the fair were the NEB-1 HAYALET and NEB-2 HAYALET. According to information provided by Nilüfer Kuzulu, a mechanical engineer and director of the Ministry of National Defense’s R&D Center, the new NEB ammunition significantly exceeds international standards with its penetrating capacity.
In tests, the ammunition penetrated 1.5-ton concrete blocks and reached the sandbox beneath, clearly demonstrating its penetrating power. The C50 high-strength concrete used in these tests is preferred for critical structures such as bridges, viaducts, strategic infrastructure, and nuclear facilities.
