Following a meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump at the White House, the Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding was signed. The agreement includes cooperation in the transfer of nuclear technology between the two countries.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the agreement initiated a new process that will further deepen the multidimensional partnership between the two countries in the field of nuclear energy.
Minister Bayraktar stated that the memorandum of understanding was signed with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the presence of the leaders after the meeting. He added that he hoped that the work to be carried out under the agreement would be mutually beneficial for both countries.
No details of the memorandum of understanding were disclosed. However, this agreement paves the way for the transfer of advanced US nuclear technology to Turkey. The technologies in question include reactor designs, safety systems, fuel cycle management, and waste treatment methods.
The agreement also establishes a foundation for Turkish companies to undertake joint projects with US companies, build nuclear power plants, and invest in subsidiary industries.
This new agreement, along with the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project currently under construction in Mersin and operated by Rosatom, Russia’s State Nuclear Energy Corporation, will be a significant step for Turkey in diversifying its partnerships in the nuclear energy sector.
