US sanctions on the way for China’s AI chips!

A new semiconductor chip war may have broken out between the US and China over artificial intelligence. Here's the detail.

Huawei’s Mate 60 series, which supports 5G technology, did not escape the attention of the US with its Kirin 9000S chipset. The US government, which examined the company on this issue and said that it “does not have the technology to produce the 5G chip domestically”, may impose new sanctions on China.

Chip war between the US and China

US President Biden and his team are reportedly planning new sanctions against China. It was reported that the Asian country is working on a new export restriction targeting its access to semiconductor chips that it is rapidly developing. Artificial intelligence chips will be the main focus of the sanctions.

The sanctions to be imposed by the US will be based on technical specifications such as processing power and performance intensity. Under the new rules, US chipmakers will have to inform the Commerce Department when placing orders with Chinese companies.

After receiving information from the technology companies, the authorities will decide whether the exports pose a national security risk. This means that sanctions on certain Chinese firms, such as Huawei and ZTE, will be expanded.

The US consideration of performance intensity will prevent Chinese companies from circumventing sanctions by buying modified components. This would prevent the US from preventing China from making advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

Huawei’s Kirin chips, developed despite the sanctions, have shown that the US is paying more attention to this issue. Although end-consumer devices are exempted, the restrictions are important for China’s economic and military dominance.
