Volkswagen is officially removing the “ID” name from its electric vehicles. The company has decided to return to its traditional naming system in order to simplify this product segment. The first changes are expected to come into effect as of 2026.
Volkswagen will bid farewell to the ID name in its electric vehicles
The ID series first emerged with the ID.3 concept, which was introduced in 2017, and went into mass production in 2019. Volkswagen expanded its product range under this sub-brand with models such as ID.4, ID.5, ID.6 SUV, ID.7 Sedan and ID. Buzz.

Company CEO Martin Sander confirmed in a statement that traditional model names will be used in the new generation of electric vehicles. Sander stated that the ID. 2all and ID. Every1 concepts that will go into production will not be sold under these names.
In this context, Volkswagen is considering reviving some classic model names with electric vehicles. For example, it was claimed that the ID.2, which is planned to be launched in 2026, will be sold under the name Polo, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. For the ID.1, which is expected to be introduced in 2027, names used in the past such as Lupo, Fox or Up! may be on the agenda.
It is said that the ID series will undergo a comprehensive facelift starting in 2026. This change may provide a suitable basis for the new naming system.
Volkswagen also plans to introduce fully electric Golf and T-Roc models in the coming years. The company’s product strategy shows that long-established vehicles such as the Passat and Tiguan may also reappear with electric versions in the future.
