Taking important steps in the truck world, Volvo Trucks has unveiled its second SuperTruck model in the prototype stage. Called Volvo SuperTruck 2, the model is 134 percent more efficient compared to a standard truck introduced in 2009.
Volvo SuperTruck 2 is 134% more energy efficient
The new electric truck model was developed as part of the SuperTruck program launched by the US Department of Energy in 2016. Classified as a heavy-duty truck, the SuperTruck 2 aims to push the limits of efficiency.
Tests show that the SuperTruck 2 is 134 percent more fuel efficient than the standard model from 2009. Volvo has covered the windshield with a cab to reduce friction, while the trailer design has been improved in the shape of a boat tail. Thanks to these changes, it was stated that friction was reduced by half.
The new model is also twice as energy efficient compared to the first version introduced in 2018. Weight savings have also been achieved thanks to the need for fewer materials, such as a composite driveshaft and fewer axles.
The 48-volt hybrid system allows drivers to use various accessories without idling the engine. In a statement on the subject, Volvo said that SuperTruck 2 was tested with a load of 30,000 kg in traffic and different terrain conditions.
The second model of the SuperTruck will be on display at the American Trucking Associations conference this month. More information about both the engine and the design will be shared during the event.
