As the competition between PlayStation and Xbox heats up, the gaming world continues to experience major upheavals. While hundreds of people were laid off, it was recently announced that Deviation Games, a Sony PlayStation affiliate, was shut down.
PlayStation studio Deviation Games shut down
An independent studio founded in 2020 and backed by Sony PlayStation has announced its closure. Deviation Games was rumored to have made many layoffs last week. Confirming these claims, the company officially announced its closure.
Several former Deviation Games employees took to social media to confirm the closure and announce that they are looking for new jobs. Character designer Alex Hunstad said that the studio closed last week and that he is actively looking for a new role.
Deviation Games Human Resources Manager Kriste Stull thanked employees in an email. She also said that they will continue to pursue new opportunities from other studios. With the closure of the studio, approximately 90 people became unemployed.
The studio was founded in 2020 by former Call of Duty and Treyarch engineers Jason Blundell and Dave Anthony. It was developing titles for PlayStation, but struggled after Blundell’s departure in 2021.
The studio didn’t have any projects in active development. But since it’s known for helping PlayStation with big-budget titles, plans may change on Sony’s side.
