The world’s most popular messaging app has updated its rules. It’s the end of the road for third-party WhatsApp chatbots operating on the platform. Meta is taking this radical step to highlight its own AI model.
Why are WhatsApp chatbots being banned?
With the change to its Terms of Service, Meta is blocking external AI integrations. The company doesn’t want users to interact directly with any bot other than Meta AI. This decision particularly affects ChatGPT and Copilot-based bots.

According to the company’s schedule, the new rules will take effect on January 15, 2026. From that date on, the restriction will begin for everyone, including WhatsApp Business users. Popular AI services will no longer be hosted on the messaging app.
Meta is also blocking AI companies from deploying their own bots using the platform’s commercial API. However, standard bots used for customer service and support will not be affected. The ban only covers scenarios where AI is directly offered as a product.
This move marks the end of platform diversity. Independent startups like Perplexity are also expected to withdraw from the app soon. As a result, starting next year, Meta AI will be the only smart assistant available to users.
