WhatsApp has announced that it will soon end support for the older version of its macOS app. MacOS owners using the Electron-based WhatsApp will have to update the app. In this context, the company invites all users to the new app.
Electron-based WhatsApp macOS app canceled
WhatsApp announced that the Electron-based application will be available for another 54 days. After this period, macOS users will need to upgrade to Catalyst. The application, which was introduced last year, is fully optimized with the iOS version.
Catalyst technology is a service offered by Apple. Thanks to this technology, applications developed for iOS can also be used on macOS. This provides more flexibility in optimization. It should be noted that WhatsApp also prefers this technology today.
The new version offers better performance compared to the previous Electron-based app. It’s worth noting that Electron apps run through a built-in browser engine. This means less compatibility with macOS.
Over the past year, WhatsApp has been gradually adding missing features to bring its new Catalyst-based app up to par with the Electron version. The development work is largely complete and the company has decided to cancel the old app.
Users can download WhatsApp for mac from the App Store or directly from the company’s website. macOS supports macOS 11 or higher. Of course, WhatsApp Web is still available in Safari or other browsers.
