Rumors about Apple are endless. One of the topics that has been on the agenda in recent years is the smart ring that the company is allegedly developing. An unexpected statement about this device called Apple Ring came from smart ring manufacturer Oura.
According to Oura CEO, Apple Ring will never be released
Rumors about Apple Ring have been going on for years. Accordingly, news about the project being canceled and then revived comes one after another. Tom Hale, CEO of smart ring company Oura, stated in an interview that Apple Ring will never be released.
CEO Hale stated that he was not convinced that Apple would produce both a smart watch and a ring. In this context, he also argued that he would not want to undermine Apple Watch. The CEO, who also drew attention to the technical difficulties of developing a smart ring, implied that “Apple expertise” would not be able to solve this.
Hale’s skepticism seems misplaced for now. Apple has been working on smart ring technology for nearly a decade, with patent applications dating back to 2015 and a follow-up patent granted in 2019. While the company’s investments in the project are unclear, it’s safe to say it has a history of pursuing ambitious initiatives.
It would also be wrong to think that the Apple Ring will compete directly with the Apple Watch. Apple prefers to produce devices that enhance its ecosystem rather than copy existing products. In other words, the Apple Watch did not replace the iPhone; on the contrary, it joined the company’s product line.
