In recent years, Samsung and LG have remained Apple’s top choices for screen suppliers. However, BOE, which failed to meet quality standards for iPad and iPhone 15 screens, could change the game with its new OLED displays.
BOE Aims to Lead iPhone 17 OLED Screen Supply with New OLED Technology
Over the past five years, Chinese manufacturers like TLC and BOE have started to challenge South Korean giants Samsung and LG in OLED screen technology. BOE, known for producing more affordable yet high-quality OLED displays, has particularly excelled in foldable screens.
Apple, impressed by BOE’s success, has given the Chinese company two opportunities to supply screens. However, BOE failed to meet the expected quality for both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 OLED displays. Despite these setbacks that disrupted the supply process, Apple may still consider working with BOE in the future.
BOE recently unveiled an OLED screen with a much wider color spectrum than LG and Samsung’s displays. It managed to cover 95% of the BT 2020 color space, known for having the widest color range. Samsung’s OLED screens reach around 90%, while LG OLED screens only meet about 70% of BT 2020 standards.
Apple has already begun working on the iPhone 17 supply chain, even right after the iPhone 16 launch. As you know, leaks about the iPhone 17 surfaced before the iPhone 16 series was even released. One rumor is that a Slim or Air model may come with the iPhone 17. In this regard, BOE stands out as a potential screen supplier for the iPhone 17.
BOE has proven capable of producing OLED screens that are both higher quality and much cheaper than those of Samsung and LG. However, for Apple’s large-scale screen supply needs, BOE would need to expand its production operations. Additionally, BOE requires more expertise in producing smaller screens and setting industry standards.
Experts believe that if BOE hadn’t failed in supplying screens for the iPhone 15, it could have become the sole supplier for iPhone 16 Pro models. BOE’s inability to meet demand for iPad screens has raised questions about whether it will learn from these mistakes and be ready for iPhone 17 screen production.
