A new rumor has emerged that will excite fans of the popular game series God of War. Reliable leaker Tom Henderson suggested on the Insider Gaming podcast that Kratos will wield the Khopesh, a weapon from ancient Egyptian mythology, in the next main game. This claim has reinforced rumors that the series will shift its focus from Norse mythology to Egyptian mythology.
New God of War, New Weapon
Henderson stated that Santa Monica Studio is also working on a new game for the main series, in addition to a 2.5D Metroidvania-style spin-off game rumored to be in development and expected to be announced at the next State of Play. According to Henderson, in this new main game, Kratos will wield a curved sickle-like Egyptian sword, similar to the weapons in the Prince of Persia series. While Henderson couldn’t recall the weapon’s name, it is believed to be the Khopesh, a derivative of the axes used by ancient Egyptian warriors.

Egyptian Rumors Gain Strength
Kratos’s use of an Egyptian weapon is being interpreted as a strong indication that the series’ next destination will be Egypt. In the previous game, God of War (2018), Kratos was given a weapon specific to that region, such as the Leviathan Axe, inspired by Norse mythology. Similarly, the use of a weapon like the Khopesh in a game set to explore Egyptian mythology seems quite logical.
In fact, God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog previously stated that the series could delve into Egyptian or Mayan mythology after Norse legends. This rumor supports Barlog’s claims.
Three years have passed since God of War: Ragnarök, and the release date of the new main game is still unknown. If rumors of a Metroidvania-style spin-off are true, we may have to wait a bit longer for the next major installment. Fans will also be treated to the God of War series, which will air on Amazon Prime Video. Filming for the first season of the series is expected to begin in March 2026.
