Bart Andre, one of Apple’s longest-serving industrial designers, has announced this month that he will retire. His departure signifies almost a complete overhaul of the team he once led.

In other words, it could be said that Apple’s notable design team has effectively been completely redesigned! Apple hired Andre in 1992, around the same time as Jony Ive. In fact, Andre was part of Ive’s team before Steve Jobs returned to the company in the late 1990s. Andre is also one of the largest holders of Apple patents.

As an industrial designer who has been essential to Apple’s design team for over 30 years, it’s hard to overstate Andre’s impact. Bart Andre has played a role in shaping the look and feel of devices and software, developing new features and interfaces, as well as designing the ringtones and alerts for the iPhone.

For instance, there have been reports of Steve Hotelling, an effective executive and innovator, deciding to retire from Apple. However, Hotelling and Tan were just the latest design experts. Other recent departures include Evans Hankey, Patrick Coffman, Colin Burns, and Shota Aoyagi.
