The Xiaomi 16 series could revive one of the brand’s boldest features, if leaked images of the upcoming flagship prove accurate.

Tipster Ishan Agarwal shared alleged photos of the Xiaomi 16 Pro Max showing a large horizontal rear camera module. The layout includes two stacked sensors on the left, a third sensor below, and an LED flash. What caught attention, however, is the hint of a secondary display integrated into the module, something last seen on the Xiaomi 11 Ultra.

OnePlus 15 might actually be the comeback no one expected

The small display on the Xiaomi 11 Ultra allowed users to check notifications, frame selfies, and preview quick settings without turning the phone around. If revived on the Xiaomi 16 series, it would set the device apart in a sea of slab smartphones and rekindle one of Xiaomi’s most recognizable design cues.

Some observers noted that the leaked camera module resembles the rumored design of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro. It raises the possibility that Xiaomi’s new look may be borrowing heavily from Apple rather than reviving its own past experiments.

While secondary screens are rare in mainstream flagships, they offer unique use cases:

    • Framing rear-camera selfies
    • Checking notifications without unlocking
    • Always-on glanceable info
    • Battery-saving quick access to essentials

If Xiaomi commits to refining this idea, it could re-establish its reputation for daring hardware decisions.

For now, the Xiaomi 16 series remains a rumor mill favorite. With an expected launch in China next month, the truth about the secondary display and whether Xiaomi is innovating or imitating will likely surface soon. Fans will keep speculating until Xiaomi confirms whether this bold design throwback makes a comeback.
