With Android 15, Google wants to organize your phone usage time more intelligently. Accordingly, it will automatically shorten the screen timeout setting when it detects that you are not using your phone. With the feature called “Adaptive timeout”, your battery life will increase and your screen will not be distracted.
Adaptive timeout coming with Android 15
Apple’s devices have a distraction mode. Google wants to introduce a similar feature with Android 15. The innovation, presented in the second Android 15 Developer Preview, is described as “automatically turns off your screen early if you’re not using your device”.
However, it’s unclear how Google will determine when a phone is not in use. It is likely to examine the use of touch controls. This feature will be disabled when video is on the screen.
The strings related to adaptive timeout are under “com.google”. This suggests that the feature could be launched specifically for Pixel devices. Previously, a similar feature called Screen Attention was released with the Pixel 4.
The adaptive timeout feature will also increase your battery life. Google will analyze the screen based on usage and turn it off when not in use. Thus, the battery will not be wasted unnecessarily.
Today, it is possible to set the screen timeout. However, this works manually. For example, if you set a 30-second timeout, it turns itself off after the first 30 seconds of no movement on the screen. Google wants to make this adaptive.
