Huawei is set to introduce a major camera innovation in its upcoming Mate 80 series. The company plans to equip its new flagship devices with a cutting-edge imaging sensor developed by SmartSens, designed specifically for high-performance photography in premium smartphones.
Huawei will use the SmartSens SC595XS image sensor in the Mate 80 series
The Mate 80 lineup will reportedly feature the SmartSens SC595XS sensor as its main camera. This recently unveiled sensor boasts a 50 MP resolution and measures 1/1.28 inches in size.

Built on the foundation of SmartSens’ SuperPixGain HDR technology, the SC595XS offers an impressive dynamic range of up to 110dB — approximately 22dB higher than its predecessors. This allows the sensor to preserve fine details in both highlights and shadows even in challenging lighting situations such as strong backlighting or scenes with high contrast.
In addition to still photography, the sensor shines in mobile videography, supporting HDR video recording at 4K resolution with frame rates of 60 fps, and even up to 120 fps in standard high-frame-rate mode.
The SC595XS features 1.22μm-sized pixels and is built on the SFCPixel-2 architecture, which enhances light sensitivity particularly in low-light environments.
Huawei is expected to unveil the Mate 80 series — including the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro+, and Mate 80 RS Master editions — by the end of this year. Early reports indicate that these devices will be powered by the Kirin 9030 chipset.
