Producing Gen 8 OLED panels for larger screens is quite challenging. Establishing factory lines to manufacture these screens costs billions of dollars and takes a long time. Therefore, companies are hesitant to invest in next-generation OLED panels.
Samsung leads in Gen 8 OLED screens
On the other hand, Gen 8 OLED panels offer lower power consumption and variable refresh rates, providing better image quality while preserving battery life. Samsung, eager to reap the benefits of the new generation panels, is taking a significant step forward.
According to the latest information, Samsung Display has started investing in Gen 8 OLED panels. As a result, the South Korean manufacturer plans to produce an OLED screen with advanced technology for the MacBook Pro by 2025. Samsung will thus begin production of Gen 8 OLED panels at least one year ahead of its competitors.
Following Samsung’s initiative, it is likely that LG and BOE will also take action in the production of next-generation OLED screens. However, LG Display has not yet taken a serious step towards Gen 8 OLED production. It is reported that LG is facing difficulties in transitioning to OLED screens, while BOE is struggling to produce iPhone screens.
Currently, manufacturers are producing Gen 6 OLED screens for devices like the iPhone. Eighth-generation screens are manufactured in larger sizes, 2200x2500mm instead of 1500x1850mm. Screens used in devices like the iPhone and MacBook Pro are later cut from these larger panels. A larger OLED panel can yield a MacBook Pro-sized screen.
With its latest move, Samsung plans to outpace its biggest competitors in MacBook Pro screen production. With the introduction of Gen 8 OLED production, Samsung will become the sole producer for the MacBook Pro. It seems that Apple will be forced to rely on Samsung for MacBook Pro screens following these developments.
Samsung’s initiation of Gen 8 OLED panel production will make it the only option for the MacBook Pro. What are your thoughts on OLED screen production and the MacBook Pro? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section.
