Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022, according to a new Wall Street Journal report. This contradicts Musk’s previous statement that he only spoke to Putin about space technologies once in 2021.
Citing unnamed officials briefed on the matter, the report said the talks between Musk and Putin reached personal, commercial and geopolitical issues. The Kremlin administration, on the other hand, stated that there was only a phone call between the two names on space cooperation. Accordingly, it denied that there was regular communication.

Sources also report that last year Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and asked him not to activate SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service over Taiwan. Starlink is currently unavailable in Taiwan despite high demand.
The ongoing communication raises national security concerns given Musk’s business ties to US military and intelligence agencies. SpaceX has a $1.8 billion Pentagon contract and Musk has agreed to a security clearance.
In a post on X, Musk rejected the Wall Street Journal’s report. Of course, the full scope of the Musk-Putin talks remains unclear at this stage.
