OpenAI has announced an update to ChatGPT’s web browsing feature that makes online shopping easier for users. With the update, which was announced on Monday, the AI can now provide personalized product recommendations. It also offers access to images, user reviews, and direct purchase links. Users can now ask detailed shopping-related questions in natural language and receive specific product suggestions in return.
ChatGPT to Compete with Google in Online Shopping
This feature is integrated into ChatGPT’s default GPT-4o model. It’s available to Free, Plus, and Pro users — and can even be accessed without logging in. When users search for a product, the AI assistant will show a variety of options in categories such as fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics.

OpenAI said the shopping results are based on structured metadata from third-party sources, including product descriptions, prices, and reviews. The company emphasized that there will be no ads in this new feature, and that it will not earn commissions or affiliate revenue from purchases.
Since launching its web browsing tool last year, ChatGPT has handled over 1 billion searches just in the past week. OpenAI stated that this latest update is part of its plan to offer a simpler, user-focused, ad-free search experience — positioning itself as a competitor to Google.
