China has approved the construction of 10 new nuclear reactors to increase its energy production capacity. The projects, whose total cost is expected to reach 27 billion dollars, will also increase the capacity of the five existing nuclear power plants in the country.
China is preparing to build 10 new nuclear reactors
The new reactors are planned to be built at Fangchenggang in Guangxi province, Sanmen in Fujian, Haiyang in Shandong, Xiapu in Chongqing and Taishan in Guangdong.

In the bulletin published by the China Nuclear Energy Association, it was stated that the country’s investment in nuclear energy engineering and construction reached a record level last year. By the end of 2024, 57 nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 60 gigawatts (GW) were in operation in the country.
In addition, there are 28 reactors under construction, with a total capacity of 33 GW. Including the 17 reactors that have been approved but not yet under construction, China’s total installed nuclear power will reach 113 GW.
According to forecasts, thanks to China’s rapid expansion strategy in the field of nuclear energy, the country will overtake the current leader, the USA, and rise to the first position in the world ranking by 2030. Currently, China ranks third in terms of installed capacity, behind the US and France.
On the other hand, a serious breakthrough was also made in domestic production capabilities. The country has started to supply the basic equipment used in its nuclear power plants entirely from its own production facilities.
