Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn’t flinching, not even with Oblivion Remastered landing in the same launch window. The star behind its breakout character, Verso, says there’s room for both in your library.
Clair Obscur leads reviews in a stacked 2025
Ben Starr, who voices Verso, sees competition as fuel, not friction. In a chat with GameSpot, he championed the game’s bold debut. “Whether you’re chasing Blue Prince or lining up for Doom: The Dark Ages, the buffet is full,” he said.
Clair Obscur is fresh blood in a year crowded with legacy sequels. And it’s not blinking. Starr made it clear, players don’t need to pick sides. “Load them both up. Enjoy the ride.”
Oblivion Remastered and Clair Obscur aren’t rivals
Some saw Oblivion’s return as a threat. Starr doesn’t. One’s bringing back a classic. The other’s tearing into new terrain. “We’re not looking back,” he said. “We’re building forward.”
That contrast? It’s the pulse of 2025. Two RPGs, same week, one rooted in memory, the other reaching for the unknown.
Scores big, hits Metacritic highs
With a 92 Metacritic score, Clair Obscur is neck and neck with Blue Prince as 2025’s top-reviewed title. GameSpot called it “phenomenal,” praising its twist on familiar systems and emotional sharpness.
Not bad for a studio with just 30 developers. Sandfall Interactive gambled on originality, and so far, the payouts’ coming in strong.
A game for now, and whenever you’re ready
Starr’s already downloaded Oblivion. He’ll get to it, but right now, it’s Clair Obscur time. “This is the moment,” he said. “No rush. Play what pulls you in.”
That speaks to the shape of gaming today. No one wins alone. No one plays everything on launch. It’s a year built for options, and for gamers, that’s a gift.
Clair Obscur earns its place, no asterisks needed
In a year stacked with sequels, Clair Obscur isn’t slipping through the cracks. It’s claiming a spotlight, sharing the stage, and speaking with its own voice. If it stays on top, great. If not, it’s already proved something bigger: new stories still have room to lead.
