Tesla did it again, and this time it turned shopping malls into its own parking lots. Elon Musk’s rapidly growing automotive empire found itself with more cars than it could sell when production outpaced sales. Here’s the fate of hundreds of unsold Tesla cars…
Elon Musk filled the mall with 300 unsold Tesla cars
The Chesterfield Mall, near St. Louis in the US, has been transformed into a new parking lot for Tesla’s excess vehicles. Yes, the place where you used to go shopping is now officially a Tesla gallery. While the Chesterfield Mall was once a destination for shopping enthusiasts, it is now overflowing with Tesla’s unsold electric vehicles.
In fact, the mall is set to be demolished soon for a $2 billion mixed-use project. However, until the demolition, the mall’s owner, the Staenberg Group, decided to offer parking services to Tesla. Tim Lowe, senior vice president of the Tesla group, revealed that there wasn’t enough parking capacity at Tesla’s local dealership, so they leased the mall parking lot.
So, currently, at least 300 Tesla cars are parked in the mall parking lot. Drone footage from Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, revealed that vehicles are still being rapidly produced and filling up factory parking lots. Additionally, not all Tesla cars are being left only in mall parking lots.
In Europe, in the town of Neuhardenberg, Germany, complaints have arisen due to increased noise from vehicles parked near the regional airport by Tesla. However, it’s safe to say that Germans aren’t particularly fond of noise.
This strategy by Tesla has not only attracted attention as an indication that the company’s production capacity is outstripping sales but also sparked criticism. So, what does this situation mean for Tesla’s future? It seems dealing with the challenges brought by rapid growth won’t be easy for Tesla.
