Fiat Doblo Production Returns to Tofaş Factory in Turkey

After a three-year hiatus, the iconic Fiat Doblo has officially resumed production at the Tofaş facility in Bursa, Turkey. This significant milestone follows the launch of a $300 million investment project known as the K9 initiative, a strategic partnership between Koç Holding and Stellantis. As part of this expansion, the Bursa plant is now manufacturing five different light commercial vehicle models for four distinct brands, reinforcing Turkey’s vital position in the global automotive supply chain. The return of the Fiat Doblo to its original production home marks a major boost for both the domestic automotive sector and the local economy.
- The K9 project involves the production of five light commercial vehicle models including the Fiat Doblo, Citroen Berlingo, Opel Combo, Peugeot Rifter, and Peugeot Partner.
- Tofaş aims to achieve a total annual production capacity of 250,000 units by combining the K9 project with existing K0 manufacturing operations.
- The project generates 1,000 new jobs and involves approximately 100 local suppliers to reach a 50 percent domestic production target.
- The agreement stipulates a production target of 660,000 light commercial vehicles by the end of 2034.
The K9 Project Increases Manufacturing Capacity
The commencement of the K9 project at the Bursa facility signifies a major upgrade in manufacturing diversity and strategic output. By integrating multiple Stellantis brands into a single production line, Tofaş has significantly optimized its operational efficiency. The factory is now producing both cargo (van) and passenger (kombi) versions of these vehicles, with an annual capacity allocation of 100,000 units specifically for the K9 lineup.
When combined with the ongoing K0 project, the total annual production volume of the Tofaş plant is projected to reach between 230,000 and 250,000 vehicles. This high volume of output ensures that approximately 20 percent of the produced vehicles are destined for international export markets, strengthening Turkey’s role as a global automotive hub.
Local Expertise Drives Engineering Success
The K9 investment emphasizes the importance of domestic engineering and supply chain integration. Tofaş has involved nearly 100 local suppliers in the production process, setting a target to achieve a 50 percent domestic content ratio. Furthermore, the project relies heavily on the expertise of the Tofaş R&D Center, where over 300 engineers and technical specialists oversee critical aspects such as safety, durability, and performance testing.
This initiative also provides a substantial boost to the local labor market, creating 1,000 new employment opportunities within the Bursa facility. By leveraging local engineering talent, the project ensures that the vehicles meet high quality and safety standards while fostering the development of the Turkish automotive ecosystem.
The Legacy of Fiat Doblo Continues
First introduced in 2000, the Fiat Doblo has been a cornerstone of the Turkish light commercial vehicle market for over two decades. Before its production was temporarily moved abroad three years ago, the model had achieved remarkable success, with more than 600,000 units sold in Turkey during its 26-year history. The return of the Doblo to its home in Bursa is seen as a strategic move to ensure supply continuity for the domestic market and to solidify Turkey’s leadership in commercial vehicle manufacturing.
