Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is working on a radical solution to meet the increasing energy needs of artificial intelligence. Schmidt recently became the largest shareholder of space startup Relativity Space and took over the role of CEO of the company.
Former Google CEO wants to build a data center in space
Schmidt wants to move data centers that will power artificial intelligence systems into space as part of the new project. The project is based on the prediction that energy resources on Earth will be insufficient. Because the energy consumption of data centers that power artificial intelligence is increasing exponentially every year.

Today, some data centers require up to 10 gigawatts of energy. This figure corresponds to 10 times the capacity of an average nuclear power plant in the US. If the current trend continues, it is estimated that this need will exceed 75 gigawatts by 2030.
This rapid increase in energy demand has pushed the limits of the existing infrastructure and led the technology world to seek alternative solutions. Eric Schmidt’s first solution suggestion was to go off-Earth. According to Schmidt, data centers to be established in Earth orbit will be able to collect solar energy much more efficiently than centers on Earth.
Because solar panels placed in orbit are not affected by light loss from the atmosphere and can be exposed to sunlight 24/7 without interruption. It is calculated that the energy collected in this way will be 8 to 9 times more than on the Earth’s surface.
