Fortnite players can now request refunds for in-game purchases based on a penalty imposed on Epic Games in 2022. According to a ruling by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Epic Games has agreed to refund a total of $245 million to players. This marks the largest FTC settlement in gaming history. Here are the details…
Who is eligible for a Fortnite refund?
According to the FTC’s decision, specific criteria must be met to qualify for a refund. Players charged for unintended purchases between January 2017 and September 2022, parents who faced unauthorized charges by their children, or players whose accounts were locked following complaints can benefit from this process. Refund applications can only be submitted via a dedicated website, where users will need to provide their Epic Games ID and an estimated amount of their purchases.
Players interested in applying for a refund must complete their submissions by January 10, 2025. Initially set for January 17, 2024, the deadline was extended to give players more time to take advantage of the process. Applicants will only need to share their Epic Games ID, and no account names or passwords will be requested, ensuring protection against potential fraud.
The refund amount will vary based on the number of applicants and the total value of incorrect charges. In the first round, approximately 600,000 players received an average of $114 each. The outcome of this new round will depend on the number of new applications. Additionally, the refund process will not negatively impact existing Fortnite accounts or in-game content.
