Intel has announced the new Thunderbolt Share application that allows two computers to control each other over a USB cable. The app makes it possible to share screens, peripherals and storage!

Thunderbolt Share can connect almost any hardware between two computers

As you know, it’s normally possible to move a mouse cursor between screens or drag and drop files between two computers by plugging in a USB cable, but with Intel’s new Thunderbolt Share system, it can be done much more quickly.

By installing this app on two Thunderbolt 4 or 5 compatible PCs and connecting them with a Thunderbolt cable, you’ll be able to share a mouse, keyboard, displays, storage and other USB peripherals, drag and drop files at Thunderbolt speeds, and synchronize data. Note that this system will not support internet connection sharing.

Jason Ziller, Intel’s director of Thunderbolt, said the app does not require a Thunderbolt-certified computer or Intel processor. However, the app will be offered to OEMs (Original Product Manufacturer) with new hardware for an additional license fee. The app will only be released for Windows, meaning Mac users won’t be able to take advantage of the feature.

PC makers including Acer, Lenovo, MSI and Razer, and accessory makers including Belkin, Kensington, Plugable and Promise Technology are among the first partners to support Thunderbolt Share. Intel plans to test and certify with PC manufacturers to ensure a great experience for users.

While some companies like Plugable have already sold easy transfer cables, it remains to be seen how Thunderbolt Share will make a difference.
