Self-driving technology has the potential to revolutionize transportation and make roads safer for all users. With self-driving cars, human error, which is the cause of the majority of traffic accidents, can be eliminated. This technology can also improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on roads. Lastly, Tesla could release new HD radar to improve self-driving to achieve this goal.
Tesla has registered a new high-resolution radar system to improve self-driving
Tesla has registered a new high-resolution radar system with the FCC and is looking for an extension on its radar technology, according to leaked documents on Twitter. The company moved away from radar sensors earlier this year in favor of “Tesla Vision,” a camera-based system, but now appears to be returning to radar technology in early 2023.
This follows CEO Elon Musk’s statement that Tesla’s full self-driving technology would arrive “this year,” which did not happen. It is unclear whether older vehicles will be able to use the new software with older hardware or if Tesla will offer free upgrades on existing cars.
The company has previously claimed that its vehicles have all the hardware necessary for full self-driving, but now seems to be changing its approach. Tesla vehicles currently come with self-driving computers, known as hardware 3.0 (HW3.0), but it is possible that the extension on this unreleased product is part of HW4.0 and the next step for full self-driving technology.
The new high-resolution radar system could be part of a redesigned Tesla Model 3, which has been rumored to be in the works. It is unclear at this stage how the new radar system will be integrated into Tesla’s self-driving capabilities and whether it will improve upon the current “Tesla Vision” camera system. We will update you with more information as it becomes available.
