Microsoft is working on a new feature for Xbox controllers in Windows 11. With an update, the company allows users to open Task View by long-pressing the Xbox button on the controller. This feature allows users to switch between games and apps more quickly.
Windows 11 introduces new functionality for Xbox controllers
Previously, a short press of this button opened the Game Bar in Windows 11. This feature allowed players to access performance data, widgets, and other gaming devices. The newly added long-press gesture simplifies the process of switching to a different app while playing a game.

This feature was developed specifically for Windows 11-based handheld consoles. On devices like Xbox Ally, which the company is reportedly working on, the same long-press gesture will activate a dedicated handheld interface.
This interface includes new animations. It’s not yet clear whether this design will be available on desktops and laptops. The feature is currently being tested with Windows Insider Dev Channel users, and Microsoft plans to roll it out to all Windows 11 users in the coming months after feedback.
This change is part of Microsoft’s strategy to make Windows more compatible with gaming-focused devices. These features, integrated directly into Xbox controllers, aim to provide a smoother, console-like experience for PC gamers.
This is a significant step, especially for gamers who use their PCs with controllers connected to a TV or are looking for new handheld consoles to compete with portable devices like the Steam Deck.
