It is claimed that Facebook has started a banning practice targeting Linux operating systems, open source software and related content. Facebook bans the posts of pages that post about Linux news and distributions.
Facebook Allegedly Censors Linux and Open Source Discussions
According to allegations, Facebook labels Linux as malware in accordance with its internal policies. In this context, it classifies Linux-oriented groups as cyber security threats. Accordingly, it was reported that even posts that redirect to Linux-oriented websites are blocked on the grounds of Facebook’s Community Standards.
However, it was stated that many users had difficulty sharing Linux-related content. Even their accounts were temporarily locked or restricted among the complaints.
This situation becomes even more controversial because the company uses Linux for a large part of its infrastructure and often seeks Linux developers. The open source community is reacting to the contradictory situation and criticising Facebook for preventing discussion of the technology it uses.
Attempts by posters to appeal were unsuccessful, and the company said that Linux topics would remain in the ‘cybersecurity filter’ for some time. This raises concerns that Linux and open source discussions will be blocked on the platform.
As questions about Facebook’s practices increase, the platform’s commitment to providing an inclusive online environment is also being questioned.
