Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, made statements about the large-scale power outages in Europe. Answering the questions of journalists, Bayraktar reminded that Turkey is also connected to Europe’s electricity system and stated that the blackout does not directly affect Turkey but carries potential risks.
Can the power outage in Europe affect Turkey?
Bayraktar stated that he briefed the Cabinet on the issue following the blackouts that started in Spain and spread to Portugal and some parts of France. Bayraktar said, ‘We do not have any problems, but it is something that can affect us. Fortunately, we are at the very edge.’ Bayraktar emphasised that there is no problem in Turkey in the current situation.

Stating that no clear explanation has been made about the source of the interruptions, Bayraktar pointed out that Spain is seen as the main responsible. According to the first evaluations made in the European energy market, it was claimed that overproduction from wind and solar energy could not be managed due to low demand and this led to grid imbalance.
Antonio Leitao, Portugal’s Minister responsible for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced today that the country’s electricity supply has returned to normal and that there were no security problems during the night of the blackouts.
Spain’s electricity distribution network Red Electrica Espanola also announced that 99.95 per cent of the country’s energy needs were met as of 07.00 in the morning and production reached 25,794 megawatts.
