Microsoft shared a radical vision for the future of its operating system in its 2030 promotional video titled “Windows 2030 Vision.” According to the published images and descriptions, Windows will transform into a fully AI-centric experience within the next five years.

In this transformation, the mouse and keyboard are being left behind as historical tools. The company predicts that children born in 2030 will view this dual-input tool as foreign as today’s youth do to the DOS operating system.

Speaking in the video, Microsoft Corporate Vice President David Weston stated that the operating system will no longer be a command-only platform but will evolve into a multimodal, voice-activated platform capable of interacting with the user, capable of visual perception and decision-making. According to Weston, Windows 2030 will understand what users say, see what they see, and perform complex tasks with just voice commands.

Weston also stated that artificial intelligence will become central not only to individual users but also to corporate structures. He stated that within five years, some companies could employ AI as cybersecurity experts, and these artificial employees could participate in Microsoft Teams meetings alongside real teams and directly participate in decision-making processes.

Microsoft defines this new era as “multimodal interaction.” This term refers to the combination of different interaction modes, such as voice commands, image recognition, and contextual understanding.

The vision video is also seen as a reflection of the significant investments Microsoft has made in recent years. The company is deepening its focus on AI not only with its investment of over $13 billion in OpenAI, but also with its partnership with Inflection AI and its rapidly growing data center infrastructure. The process, which began with the integration of Windows Copilot into Office, Edge, Teams, and many other platforms, represents the first stages of this long-term transformation.
