LG Display has stepped up its game in producing OLED panels for Apple’s iPad Pro. With Samsung reducing its production, LG Display is stepping in to fill the gap by producing an additional 1 million panels. Here are the details…
Samsung Reduces Production: LG Display to Manufacture 1 Million Additional OLED iPad Pro Panels for Apple
As you may know, Apple recently launched its 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays. While Samsung Display has been supplying panels for the 11-inch model, LG Display has been providing panels for the 12.9-inch model. Now, with Samsung reducing its production, LG Display has taken over and will produce 1 million OLED panels for the iPad Pro.
According to the latest information, Apple’s market strategy has become more cautious, leading to a reduction in the total shipment estimate for OLED iPads to 7 to 8 million units, down from the previously estimated 9 to 10 million units. Industry sources indicate that LG Display’s panel supply has increased from the current 3.5 million units to 4.5 million units.
Specifically, the supply of panels for the 11-inch model has increased from 500,000 units to 1.5 million units due to Samsung Display’s reduced shipments. Samsung Display informed its partners that it plans to cut production by half, stating, “We will reduce production by nearly half starting from the end of the third quarter.”
Industry experts note that LG Display has gained an advantage with its advanced OLED “dual-stack tandem” technology, boosting its shipments. However, considering Apple’s plan to expand OLED technology across its entire iPad lineup, both panel suppliers are expected to benefit from this situation in the future. While it remains to be seen who will ultimately come out on top, for now, LG Display appears to have the upper hand.
