Bungie’s highly anticipated new PvP shooter Marathon is on the agenda with a developer update released this week. However, the update did not use real footage from the game. As we get closer to the game’s 2025 release date, questions about the development pipeline are increasing.
Bungie says development for Marathon is ongoing
Bungie shared an update this week about Marathon, the PvP shooter in development. However, the update does not offer any new details about the game. Game director Joe Ziegler acknowledged that they can’t share gameplay footage in the video, and that development is still in the early stages.
He made general statements about planned player abilities, loot systems and character gear. However, no information on core gameplay mechanics was revealed. Ziegler said that environment designs are currently starting to take shape, but other elements such as character models are still being worked on.
This shows that the game is at an early stage. No new gameplay or visuals were shown, making it difficult to assess Marathon’s current state. On the other hand, the update did not renew the game’s release date. Expectations point to a 2025 release.
Given the challenges at Bungie, such as leadership changes and employee layoffs, the release date is becoming increasingly uncertain. Compared to other developers who have shared their work in development, Bungie has shared very little information about Marathon.
