Semiconductor industry leader TSMC has launched next-generation chip production at both its headquarters in Taiwan and new facilities in the United States. As the company enters a new technological era, dubbed the “Angstrom era,” it has significantly accelerated its production schedule. This new era will pave the way for more powerful and efficient processors.
Major Investment Plan from TSMC
According to the latest information, TSMC is making a major investment in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung. This facility, valued at approximately $50 billion, will house six different factories. Five of these factories will focus on mass production of highly advanced chips such as 2 nanometer (nm) and 1.6 nanometer (A16) chips. The sixth factory will be responsible for the production of 1.4 nanometer (A14) technology by 2028.

Taiwan isn’t the only production center TSMC is accelerating. The company has also brought forward the production schedule at its Arizona, US, facility by one year. Accordingly, 2-nanometer (N2) chip production is targeted to begin in the second half of 2026. This move is seen as a strategic step in response to geopolitical concerns and the US government’s efforts to increase domestic production. However, the capacity increase in Arizona is reportedly presenting challenges such as water and electricity infrastructure.
Intel, TSMC’s main rival in this chip production race, is not sitting idle. Intel is also expected to mass produce its own 1.4-nanometer technology, dubbed 14A, in 2028. This suggests that the competition between the two technology giants will intensify in the coming years. The fact that both companies are targeting the same technology level could shift the balance of power in the industry.
All these developments directly impact the future of the technologies we use in every aspect of our lives, from smartphones to high-performance computers. Every reduction in manufacturing technology translates to faster, less energy-consuming, and more capable devices. So, who do you think will prevail in this rivalry between TSMC and Intel?
