Tesla has been working on full autonomy for a long time. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has made various claims regarding this matter, but most of their promises have not yet been realized. Now, Elon Musk has put forward an even more serious claim.
Elon Musk points to the end of the year for Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous driving
Elon Musk, who announced that they will reach the level of fully autonomous driving without human control by the end of the year, stated that this technology could be referred to as Level 4 or Level 5. However, the gap between Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous driving technologies caused Elon Musk’s statements to be met with skepticism.
Technically speaking, there is a significant difference between Level 5 autonomous driving technology and Level 4. Level 5 autonomous driving can control the vehicle autonomously in all weather and road conditions, unlike Level 4. With such a substantial difference, Elon Musk’s statement has sparked discussions among experts.
Considering that Tesla’s FSD Beta driving system prompts drivers to take control in terms of weather conditions, we believe it is a bit early to talk about Level 5 driving. Therefore, Elon Musk’s target of the end of the year for Level 4 or Level 5 autonomous driving seems somewhat utopian.
We can say that Tesla is in a good position with Level 3 autonomous driving with its FSD Beta system. However, the fact that this system still requires the driver to take control in certain situations indicates that there is still time for Level 4 and Level 5.
Elon Musk and Tesla have previously given dates for full autonomy, but the promises have not been fulfilled. The company continues to claim that every car sold since 2016 will eventually offer a level of full autonomous driving that is safer than human drivers through software updates.
Let’s see if Elon Musk will be able to start offering fully autonomous driving technology in their vehicles by the end of the year, as he claims. What are your thoughts on Tesla and fully autonomous driving systems? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section.
