Mercedes has made significant strides in its ongoing battle against the sale of counterfeit and aftermarket parts. The company, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide, is actively working to identify and eliminate these parts, having announced the seizure of over 1.6 million fake parts in 2023. Aftermarket products not only cause financial losses but also tarnish the brand’s reputation. More critically, counterfeit parts like fake brake pads pose serious safety risks by increasing stopping distances.
Mercedes has emphasized that counterfeit parts threaten road safety, harm the environment, and fail to meet fair wage or job safety standards. Consequently, the company is making significant efforts to combat the sale of these parts. Board member Renata Jungo Brüngger highlighted that the counterfeiting industry operates within organized crime networks and generates high profit margins.

Identifying and seizing counterfeit parts is a challenging task. Teams, known as “brand protectors,” conduct months-long investigations to uncover counterfeiting operations and provide authorities with the necessary information. Even after raids are conducted, Mercedes’s work doesn’t stop. Some counterfeit parts are so well-made that distinguishing them from genuine parts is difficult, prompting the company to have a dedicated team to verify the authenticity of these parts.
In 2023 alone, Mercedes conducted over 740 raids worldwide, resulting in the seizure of more than 1.6 million aftermarket parts. These parts include counterfeit brake system components, wheels, steering system parts, and body panels. The seized parts are destroyed, and in some cases, the factories where they were produced are identified.
Mercedes has also provided customers with simple tips to avoid counterfeit parts. When ordering parts online, customers should be cautious—if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. “Low prices, irregularities in product quality, or suspicious online sources” are key red flags to watch out for when shopping.
