In 2024, NASA will send four astronauts to the Moon as part of the Artemis II mission!
Recently, NASA organized an event at Ellington Field near the Johnson Space Center in Houston. During this event, they disclosed the astronauts who will be heading to the Moon in the Artemis II mission, in collaboration with CSA.
Artemis II, the first crewed mission aimed at establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon, will carry four astronauts. The names of these astronauts are as follows: Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist 1 Christina Hammock Koch, and Mission Specialist 2 Jeremy Hansen.
For this mission, a flight test will be conducted. The approximately 10-day Artemis II flight test will begin on the Space Launch System rocket. It will also validate the life support system of the Orion spacecraft and confirm the techniques required for humans to live and thrive in space.
François-Philippe Champagne, who is responsible for the Canadian Space Agency, made a statement regarding the matter. He said, “We are returning to the Moon, and Canada is at the heart of this exciting journey. Thanks to our longstanding collaboration with NASA, a Canadian astronaut will fly on this historic mission. (…)”
The flight, expected to be completed in December, is based on the Artemis I mission. This program will pave the way for long-term human exploration missions. NASA’s next target after the Moon is Mars. Regarding the mentioned flight, NASA Johnson Director Vanessa Wyche also made a statement.
“For the first time in over 50 years, these individuals will be the first humans to fly around the Moon. Among the crew, there is the first woman, the first African American, and the first Canadian to embark on a lunar mission. All four astronauts will represent the best of humanity while conducting exploration for the benefit of everyone.”
