Nintendo has announced that first-party games developed for its next-generation game console, the Switch 2, will be sold on physical cartridges. It has already been confirmed that some third-party games will be offered for sale as code cards.
First-party games for Nintendo Switch 2 are coming in cartridge format
Accordingly, Nintendo games such as Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Kirby will only be available in stores in cartridge format, not with cards containing digital codes. However, some studios have difficulty fitting some games prepared for Nintendo Switch 2 directly onto cartridges due to the 64 GB capacity limit.

For this reason, they are turning to cards that only offer download codes in a physical box as an alternative. This method allows the game to be downloaded from online stores and appeals to players who want a physical box collection. However, this option will not be offered for games developed by Nintendo itself.
No official statement has been made as to why the company made this decision. The advantages offered by code cards include the ability to download the game from any device with an internet connection, to lend it physically and to use it in regions where eShop is not available.
However, Nintendo is currently following a policy of not giving up on the classic cartridge format on the Switch 2. This decision was welcomed by players who loved the feeling of physical games, but disappointed players who were used to digitalization.
