Apple cancels microLED display order for new Watch Ultra
According to the information that emerged last year, Apple will change the display technology in its new flagship smartwatch. The microLED Apple Watch Ultra model, which was allegedly delayed due to production problems, has been shelved.
Osram, which is working on microLED display technology, announced in a press release that an important project supporting the microLED strategy has been canceled. Making a statement on the subject, the company said, “A key project supporting the microLED strategy was unexpectedly canceled. Our company will re-evaluate the microLED strategy.”
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed that Apple has canceled the microLED Apple Watch project with Osram. Kuo also stated that Apple canceled all projects related to microLED displays on the grounds that the display technology would not add significant value to its products.
Apple is rumored to have found microLED production costs too high to be economically viable. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman claims that Osram is just one of Apple’s microLED suppliers. However, Gurman states that Apple will gradually switch to microLED displays in its device portfolio.
