Construction is progressing rapidly on the world’s tallest skyscraper, a structure in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Previously known as Kingdom Tower and Jeddah Tower, the JEC Tower (Jeddah Economic Company Tower) will surpass the current record-holder, the Burj Khalifa, at over one kilometer.
The world’s tallest skyscraper is under construction
The building’s final height has not yet been released. However, the architectural firm responsible for the project, AS+GG (Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill), has confirmed that it will definitely exceed one kilometer.
This height surpasses the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates, currently the world’s tallest building at 828 meters. It is also nearly twice the height of One World Trade Center, the tallest skyscraper in the United States, and more than three times the height of the Shard, Europe’s tallest structure.
Rising over Jeddah’s port, the JEC Tower will be more than three times the height of the Eiffel Tower upon completion. The skyscraper will have a total of 59 elevators and at least 157 floors. The building will feature the world’s highest observation deck. It will also include a luxury hotel, extensive office spaces, and high-end residences.
Work on the project, which was halted in 2018, resumed in January of this year, and construction has now gained significant momentum. The tower’s core has reached the 69th floor, with the side wings following approximately five floors behind.
Approximately half of the concrete for the building has already been poured. Architects Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill shared a progress photo taken at the site in November. Despite much work remaining, the firm stated that the building remains on target for completion in 2028, with a target date of August. More details about the project are expected to be released next year.
