Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is making groundbreaking advancements by directly connecting the human brain to digital systems. Recently, it was announced that a paralyzed man successfully flew a virtual drone using only the power of his thoughts. An implant made of 192 electrodes placed in his brain interpreted neural activities and converted them into movement commands with the help of artificial intelligence.
AI Interprets Brain Signals
Researchers from the University of Michigan developed an advanced algorithm that enabled the user to trigger four different signals. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, could not use his hands or fingers due to a spinal cord injury. However, by imagining moving his fingers in his mind, he was able to successfully control the virtual drone.

This newly developed technology, which transmits brain signals directly to control mechanisms, is considered a revolutionary development for individuals with disabilities.
In this process, the brain signals were analyzed by artificial intelligence, and the user’s commands were transmitted instantly to the drone. A signal was created for the first two fingers, another for the second two fingers, and a separate command for the thumb. Using this system, the participant successfully navigated the drone through an obstacle course designed for artists.
Researchers note that brain-computer interface technology could be used for more complex tasks in the coming years. However, this system currently has some limitations. The artificial intelligence must be specially trained for the user, and over time, changes in brain activity may require retraining processes.
